*Strap Hinge Installation Instructions:

Once you have received your new hinges be sure that you have all of the parts. You will need Safety Glasses, a pencil, a router or chisel and hammer, an adjustable wrench or pliers and a Philips head screw driver, a drill and drill bit (drill size is specified below). Then decide the placement on your door where you would like the straps to be mounted, but do not mark or mount them yet. Next measure from the top of your door down to where you want the hinge, I usually measure to the bottom edge of the strap. Use that measurement and measure down from the the top of the doorway opening and mark it with a pencil on the inner side of the door jamb toward the side you wish to mount your hinges. Now line up that mark with the base of the pin, holding the flat side of the pintle out, you should be able to see the countersunk holes, and the pin over the face side of the jamb.

Now trace the pintle plate with your pencil, you will then need to chisel or rout out that part of the jamb to allow the pintle plate to seat flush to the jamb, be sure that the pin is as straight up as possible. Do the same for the lower pintle. Once you are satisfied with the cutout, you will need to mark the holes and pre drill the holes with no larger than an 1/8" drill bit (generally a maximum of half the screw thickness). This will keep the wood from splitting and improve the grip of the screw. The depth of the hole should be approximately half to 2/3rds the length of the screw. Now you are ready to mount the pintle plates, be sure to never over tighten the screws, just snug the screws, and if needed re-snug the screws after installation. Once the plates are securely in place you will need to shim the door in place. Note: be sure not to butt the door tightly to the jamb as the door will expand and contract, allow approximately 1/16" to 1/8" maximum between the door and jamb. Once the door is firmly shimmed in place, slide the strap onto the pin and hold it against the door, level the strap as best you can or (where it feels comfortable) and mark the holes, again you may want to carefully pre drill the holes. Carefully thread the screws in and snug them, do not over tighten them as this may cause them to strip the holes, which can be a real problem. You may now remove your shims and swing the door open and closed to ensure proper function, at first it is possible for them to be a little stiff, but after some use they will free up.
